—  PRELOΔD, Introduction

The Story Behind the Science

A cardiac anesthesiologist who almost didn’t come home.

Not a near-miss in traffic. Not a difficult shift. Christopher Larson, DO — a man who had spent two decades mastering the preparation of his patients before the demand arrived — sat with a different kind of choice. Long enough that it stopped feeling like a crisis and started feeling like a plan.

“I had spent two decades mastering the preparation of my patients before the demand arrived — pre-loading fluids, managing airways, anticipating physiology, stabilizing trauma before it became crisis. I had applied almost none of that discipline to my own system. I gave everything outward and called the depletion virtue.”

What followed was a framework tested not in a lab, but against a marriage under strain, five daughters who needed their father present, and a career demanding peak performance from a depleted nervous system.

It held.

The Core Insight

“The gap between who you want to be and who you show up as is not a character gap. It is a preparation gap.”

PRELOΔD, Introduction
The Medical Truth

“Your biology doesn’t respond to the world as it is. It responds to the world as you predict it to be.”

— Chapter 3: The Biological Pivot
The Promise

PRELOΔD will not make hard things easy. It will make you different before hard things begin.”

PRELOΔD, Introduction

The Science

The Positioning Matrix:
Three Models of the Prediction Engine

Your brain is not a camera. It is a Bayesian algorithm. These three models explain why the same event destroys one person and elevates another — and what you can do about it before the event arrives.

01

The Biological Pivot

Your stress response is not determined by the actual threat you face. It is determined by the meaning your brain assigns to that threat. Crum et al. (2013) demonstrated that a mindset shift alone reorients the complete hormonal cascade — cortisol down, DHEA up, performance sustained.

“Your stress is about meaning, not the threat itself.”

02

The Dopamine Delta

Happiness is not determined by what you have. It is determined by the gap between what you have and what you expected to have. You can be objectively successful and subjectively miserable — if your prediction engine has been anchored to an even more impressive standard.

“Your happiness is about the gap, not the achievement.”

03

The Geography of Normal

Your baseline expectations — the invisible standard against which you measure everything — are not chosen by you. They are downloaded directly from the people physically around you. Christakis & Fowler (2008) traced this effect through three degrees of social separation.

“Your sense of ‘normal’ is borrowed, not chosen.”

The Convergence

“Burnout is not a character flaw. It is what happens when your prediction engine consumes itself — when the gap between expectation and reality becomes so large, so persistent, and so invisible that your biology begins to interpret every day as a threat to your survival.

The path out is not willpower. It is clarity.”

Lines That Change the Lens

“An attitude of gratitude is something you hold.

An aptitude for gratitude is something you build.”

— Chapter 5

“Gethsemane was not the beginning of His preparation.
It was the proof of it.”

PRELOΔD, Introduction

“Children that age read authenticity with devastating accuracy.

She wasn’t wrong.”

PRELOΔD, Preface

“Don’t be a Prisoner of Prediction.

— Chapter 6: The Ledger

“You’ve been trying to win in the arena. The arena was decided before you walked in.”

PRELOΔD, Introduction

Heart Rate Variability

Your Nervous System’s
Daily Readiness Score

HRV is the most accessible real-time biomarker of prediction engine health available to consumers. The PRELOΔD protocol builds HRV tracking into the daily cycle — not as biohacking, but as clinical intelligence.

Heart Rate Variability — HRV — is the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats. Despite the name, you want it high. A heart that beats with slight natural variation is governed by a well-regulated nervous system: one that can shift fluidly between activation and recovery. A heart that beats with mechanical regularity is running under sustained load with reduced adaptability.

Consumer wearables now measure HRV continuously during sleep. The Oura Ring, Garmin, Apple Watch, WHOOP, and Polar chest straps all produce reliable trending data. A single reading means little — what matters is the trend. A number that declines over five or more consecutive days is a biological signal worth paying attention to before adding more cognitive demand.

From the Book

“Tracking HRV is not biohacking. It is the physiological equivalent of checking the weather before deciding what to wear — accurate data about the current state of the system you are about to ask to perform.”

What’s Inside
PRELOΔD

1
How a $125M Spacecraft Explains Your Arguments
The Mars Climate Orbiter didn't fail from bad engineering. It failed from a unit mismatch. Your prediction engine has the same problem.
The framework begins with a failure — NASA's, not yours.
2
The Four Cylinders Your Life Actually Runs On
Luke 2:52 described it 2,000 years ago: wisdom, stature, favour with God, favour with man. Modern neuroscience confirms all four operate the same prediction engine.
The oldest whole-person framework meets the newest brain science.
3
The Biological Pivot: Your Body Takes Orders From a Story
The milkshake study. The skin study. The surgeon's secret. Your stress chemistry responds to the label, not the event. Change the label first.
30 seconds. Three steps. Different biology.
4
Dopamine Is Not the Pleasure Chemical
Everything you know about dopamine is wrong. The happiness equation, the digital dopamine delusion, and why winners measure differently than everyone else.
Gap thinking vs. Gain thinking — one creates burnout, one creates resilience.
5
An Aptitude for Gratitude
Not gratitude journaling. A neurobiological recalibration of your brain's default threat posture. The difference between an attitude and an aptitude is a practice.
Savoring: The practice of inhabiting what's good.
6
The Ledger: How Emotions Report on Predictions
Emotions are not reactions to the world. They are predictions about it. The Emotional PRELOΔD and the Distortion Audit.
Don't be a Prisoner of Prediction.
7
The Geography of Normal
Your baseline expectations are not chosen. They are downloaded. Mirror neurons, social contagion, and the Wi-Fi Reset Protocol.
Your “normal” is borrowed from the people closest to you.
8–10
The Silent Saboteur & Unspoken Contracts
The most destructive force in every relationship is the agreement nobody made. The Marshmallow Study reread, declarative language, and the Five-Layer Pre-Conversation PRELOΔD.
The conversation before the conversation determines the conversation.
11
The Pygmalion Mirror
Your expectations of others don't just predict their behavior — they produce it. The Pygmalion Effect, the Golem Effect, and Leadership's Dark Side.
Neural coupling: How your internal state broadcasts through every room.
12–14
Anchoring, Pre-Mortem & The Sphere of Agency
Defensive pessimism as a high performer's secret weapon. Making failure visible before it happens. Viktor Frankl's last human freedom and the practice of acceptance.
The Pre-Mortem: seeing the ending before it's written.

What Ancient Wisdom Always Knew

Every Creation Theology
Encoded This First

“The Lord does not create reactively. He does not improvise under pressure. He prepares the spiritual reality before the temporal moment arrives, and the temporal moment unfolds from that preparation.

PRELOΔD, at its deepest level, is not a human framework modeled on divine wisdom. It is a human practice modeled on divine method.”

PRELOΔD, Chapter 1: The Blueprint

Latter-day Saint
“First spiritual, secondly temporal” — D&C 29:31. The blueprint precedes the building, always. “If ye are prepared ye shall not fear.”
Jewish
Tzimtzum and the sefirot — the divine blueprint through which creation flows. “God looked into the Torah and created the world.”
Islamic
Al-Lawh al-Mahfuz — the Preserved Tablet of divine knowledge, existing before creation itself. Tawakkul: align the inner to the divine before outer action begins.
Vedic / Hindu
Sankalpa — the sacred intention set before action. Creation proceeds from the subtle to the gross. The clear intention before the act determines the quality of the act.

“The fMRI studies, the cortisol assays, the HRV measurements — these are science reading the first lines of a text whose full length it has not yet seen. What the research has documented is the visible edge. The covenant reaches further than the instruments can currently follow.”

About the Author

Built in the
Operating Room. Tested at Home.

Christopher D.D. Larson understands himself as a son of God and a covenant disciple of Jesus Christ which help PRELOΔD his daily life as husband to Robyn, father of five daughters and cardiothoracic anesthesiologist.

His clinical career has placed him at one of the most demanding intersections of science and human performance: the operating room, where the margin for error is measured in milliliters and seconds, and where the quality of preparation before the procedure begins determines more of the outcome than most people ever see.

Dr. Larson trained in osteopathic medicine — a discipline that treats the human being as an integrated whole, body and mind and spirit in continuous interaction. That foundational orientation shapes every page of PRELOΔD. This is not a collection of hacks for isolated domains of performance. It is a framework for the whole person.

The framework was not built in a research laboratory or a consulting practice. It was built in the wreckage of a life that was coming apart under the weight of sustained overextension — and tested against the most rigorous conditions available: a marriage under strain, five daughters who needed their father present rather than merely nearby, an entire ward of people who depended on a Bishop who had nothing left to give, and a career demanding peak performance from a nervous system running on a depleted baseline.

“The practices described in these pages held under those conditions. They hold imperfectly, and they hold. Dr. Larson continues to test them daily against the same conditions that built them. He is an open book. Every difficult thing in these pages is there because someone reading them is living a version of it right now.”

PRELOΔD, About the Author

He lives in the American West with his wife Robyn and their five daughters, who provide daily, rigorous, and occasionally humbling real-world feedback on every framework in this book. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
